What is SEM? (Search Engine Marketing)

‘SEM’ (Search Engine Marketing), is the integration between ‘Search Engine’, in other words, the tool using for searching data and information on the Internet, and ‘Marketing’. Thus, ‘SEM’ (Search Engine Marketing) refers to the marketing through the search tools on the Internet.

SEM is one of the efficiency channels to promote website. It is easy to reach the audience because “keyword” is used when searching for data and information through the Search Engine.

After input the keyword in the search field on Search Engine website, it will be processed and displayed as a list of websites that relevance to that particular keyword on the search result page. The higher rank of the keyword on the website cause more opportunities to gain the attention from the customers. This will lead to the increasing of the customer and sales volume for the website’s owner.

In the present day, the most famous Search Engines are Google and Yahoo!. Google takes the first place among the other Search Engine in the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, as well as in Thailand. However, Yahoo! is the most popular Search Engine for people who live in Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Search Engine Makering can be divided into 2 parts as follow:

1. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) or website promoting is used for improving the rank of the website in the Search Result Page by optimizing the structure of the website according to the rule of Search Engine.

2. PPC (Pay Per Click) is the advertising space on the Search Result Page. When the advertisement is clicked, the client has to pay for the Search Engine per one click. ‘PPC’ have some difference from ‘SEO’, that is, it is unnecessary to modify the website’s structure. The client’s website can be shown on the first page of Search Result Page by bidding the desired keyword.
